The peer-led and founded group functions as a support group and as an activist group. Most of the girls are homeless, living under a bridge near Cape Town’s castle. Their work is of incredible value and to continue doing so they need your support!
Sistaazhood
SistaazHood is a support group for trans women sex workers in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a peer-led organization, founded by 5 trans women sex workers. The group currently consists of 37 trans women sex workers from Cape Town. As a community they support one another focussing on health; both physical and mental health.
Furthermore SistaazHood is an activist organization advocating for the decriminalization of sex work and the human & health rights of transgender sex workers. Sistaazhood works in close collaboration with other non-governmental organisations such as Triangle Project, Sex Workers Advocacy Task force (SWEAT) and Gender DynamiX.
Sistaaz of the Castle
Sistaaz of the Castle is an ongoing collaboration between photographer Jan Hoek, Fashion designer Duran Lantink and six women from the SistaazHood community that started five years ago. The Sistaaz are eager activists, proud to be trans, proud to be a sex worker, and even prouder of their stunning sense of style. And they want it to be acknowledged.
Together they created a series of photographs and a fashion collection based on the girls’ appearance and their ability to turn whatever they find into the most exuberant outfits. This has already resulted in a fashion show at Amsterdam Fashion Week (a show in Cape Town in still on our wish list) and a photo exhibition in Foam (Photography museum Amsterdam) and an activistic publication that combines fashion with documentary, it can be ordered here.
